Birthdaversary trip

About a month ago, Justin's mom asked if they could watch Edison for a weekend to get some quality time with him before his new cousin arrives. (Only 2-ish more weeks to go!) We jumped at the chance to take a trip to celebrate our 14th anniversary and our 37th birthdays, all of which fell in the first two weeks of July.  We wrapped a personal trip around one of Justin's many business trips and spent the weekend at Semiahmoo resort right across the border from Vancouver BC.

On Friday afternoon, Justin treated me to a massage while he golfed with some customers. On Saturday, we went golfing together. I am embarrassed to admit that it was my first real time. My only goal was to have fun and get some practice in a low pressure situation.

Have you ever seen that Saturday Night Live skit with the couple practicing being perfect before they go to a party? Naturally, we were paired up with a couple just like them. They were not impressed with us.

Lessons learned:

• Justin and I are both terrible at golf. Terrible. Especially when paired up with people who golfed competitively on a college team. 
• When golfing with a couple who awards themselves prizes for being under par, it is best not to even bother keeping score.  Finishing holes and using clubs becomes optional as well. 
• A box of 12 brand new golf balls might not be enough on a course with trees and water hazards. You might need to stop at the clubhouse after the first 9 holes to buy another box. 
• Beer is also a smart purchase in this situation. 
• Another beer is worth the jog from the 11th hole back to the clubhouse.
• Always rent a cart. 
• You can get blisters through golf gloves. 
• Even if you are on a trip to celebrate your anniversary, and they think they are being sly, having a couple you just met make out in front of you is awkward. For all 5 of the hours. 
• Beer helps ease the pain of sore legs, blisters, and awkward social situations. 

We had an amazing weekend despite (or because of?) our golfing. We enjoyed coffee in the mornings sitting in rocking chairs looking at the ocean. We enjoyed mid-morning walks looking at the ocean.  We enjoyed delicious seafood dinners while looking at the ocean. And we ended each night sitting on a log drinking a bottle of wine watching the sun set while looking at the ocean.  One night, there was even a live band playing our song right as the sun disappeared. It was pretty magical.

Fun update: I just cyber-stalked the perfect couple while waiting for that video to upload. They are both married...to other people. That explains their reluctance to engage in much personal small talk with us, as well as all the kissing.  I don't feel so bad about ruining their little golf trip any more!
