Justin finished the courtyard just in time for the bad weather. It looks better than I could have possibly imagined.
The upper part of the courtyard was originally covered in brick pavers and the bottom part was cracked concrete. The stairs to the garage were very unstable brick pavers and there was gravel everywhere. All of the brick pavers, of course, were laid improperly.
During construction, we removed all of the brick pavers (they lived for months in giant stacks in the driveway) and discovered more concrete. We cut both the upper and lower concrete to dig trenches and bury all of the overhead electrical lines, as well as to run plumbing to the carriage house. Our options for what to do with the space were pretty limited by the time we were done.
We ended up removing the lower concrete entirely and replacing it with the brick pavers we had moved months earlier. We patched the upper concrete and covered it with flagstone that we had earlier removed from the side of the house. We also built new stairs, a couple retaining walls, and a new sidewalk with the rest of the pavers. We also buried a ton of tile line and drains to fix our drainage problems. (By the way, when I say "we" in this entire paragraph, I really mean Justin.)
